Cambium Networks Administration: What WiFi and Wireless Operators Should Do Now
If your network depends on Cambium Networks equipment, now is a good time to make a plan.
Not a panic plan. Not a “replace everything tomorrow” plan.
A business continuity plan.
On September 14, 2026, Cambium Networks Ltd., a UK subsidiary of Cambium Networks Corporation, entered administration. Cambium also disclosed that it reduced its global workforce by 260 employees—53.6% of its workforce—on September 11.
For businesses, property managers, Wireless Internet operators, and organizations running Cambium WiFi or fixed wireless equipment, the important question is no longer just:
“Is our network working today?”
It is:
“Can we still manage, repair, restore, and expand this network if the vendor services we depend on change or disappear?”
That is the question worth answering now.
First: You Probably Do Not Need to Replace Everything
Working Cambium equipment does not suddenly stop working because the company entered administration.
So there is no reason to start pulling perfectly good access points and radios off walls simply because of the announcement.
But there is a reason to understand exactly what your network depends on.
That includes:
- Cloud management
- Vendor licensing
- Firmware downloads
- Product activation
- Replacement hardware
- Technical support
- Spare parts
- Controller access
- Configuration backups
- External services required by certain wireless systems
The goal is to find those dependencies before one of them becomes an emergency.
What Has Cambium Said About cnMaestro and Product Availability
Cambium's September 16 communication indicated that cnMaestro Cloud is intended to continue operating at least through October 1.
That wording matters.
October 1 should not automatically be treated as a confirmed shutdown date. It is better viewed as a reason to get your network documentation and recovery options in order now.
Cambium has also said production of its WiFi access points, NSE devices, and cnMatrix switches has been discontinued, while existing finished inventory may still be available through distributors or the administration process.
The company's fixed wireless broadband products are in a somewhat different position, with Cambium indicating that it expects much of that business to resume after a pause.
In other words, a business running Cambium enterprise WiFi has a different set of concerns from a WISP operating PMP, ePMP, or PTP radios.
Your migration plan should reflect that.
Before Buying Anything, Back Up Everything
This should be priority number one.
Ask yourself a simple question:
If your controller or a critical radio failed tomorrow, could another administrator rebuild the network without logging into a vendor portal or calling the person who originally installed it?
If the answer is “probably” or “I think so,” you have work to do.
Save copies of:
- Controller backups
- Individual device configurations
- Firmware files
- Software installers
- Network diagrams
- Device inventories and serial numbers
- License and entitlement records
- Administrator credentials
- VLAN settings
- RADIUS configurations
- SSID profiles
- TLS certificates
- RF settings
- Antenna information
- Point-to-point link documentation
- Any other information needed to rebuild the network
And please; do not keep the only backup on the device you are backing up.
A backup file is also only useful if it can actually be restored.
For an important network, test the recovery process. Make sure someone other than the original administrator can follow the documentation and bring the system back.
That small exercise can expose missing passwords, undocumented settings, unavailable firmware, or other problems while there is still time to fix them.
Should You Move cnMaestro On-Premises?
For some Cambium environments, it deserves consideration.
Cambium has offered cnMaestro On-Premises as a virtual appliance, giving organizations the option of hosting network management infrastructure themselves instead of relying entirely on Cambium's cloud service.
That can reduce one important external dependency.
But it does not necessarily make the entire network independent of Cambium infrastructure.
CBRS is a good example. Depending on the architecture, radios may still require communication with cloud-based services and a Spectrum Access System to remain authorized to transmit.
So moving cnMaestro into your own data center can be useful—but it should be part of a dependency review, not treated as a magic “everything is now local” button.

Thinking About Replacing Cambium WiFi? Survey First.
If your Cambium WiFi equipment is reaching the end of its useful life—or you are concerned about future hardware availability—this is a good time to compare alternatives.
It is not a good time to simply count your Cambium access points and order the same number of something else.
Different access points have different antenna designs, coverage characteristics, client capacity, mounting requirements, and RF behavior.
Start with a professional WiFi site survey and network design before committing to replacement hardware.

RUCKUS WiFi as a Cambium Alternative
For organizations moving away from Cambium enterprise WiFi, RUCKUS is one option worth evaluating—especially in environments where density, interference, outdoor coverage, or centralized management matter.
Current RUCKUS options include WiFi 7, WiFi 6E, and WiFi 6 access points for indoor and outdoor networks.
For example, the RUCKUS R770 is designed for demanding, high-density WiFi 7 deployments.
That does not mean the R770—or any particular AP—is automatically the right replacement for every Cambium installation.
The right choice depends on the building, RF environment, number and type of devices, expected traffic, switching infrastructure, budget, and management requirements.
Manufacturer maximum client counts and PHY speeds should also be treated as specifications—not promises of actual Internet throughput.
Real-world WiFi performance depends on things like interference, channel width, airtime utilization, client capabilities, signal levels, uplink capacity, and application traffic.
What About Point-to-Point Wireless Links?
Point-to-point systems need a slightly different approach.
For simple building-to-building links, several lower-cost wireless bridge options are available from manufacturers such as Ubiquiti and MikroTik.
But choosing a bridge based only on advertised range or throughput is risky.
A proper wireless path should consider:
- Distance
- Clear line of sight
- Fresnel-zone clearance
- Frequency
- Interference
- Antenna alignment
- Rain attenuation at higher frequencies
- Required uptime
- Available mounting locations
A 60 GHz radio advertising multi-gigabit speeds, for example, can be an excellent solution on the right path and the wrong solution on another.
Design the link first. Choose the radio second.
Point-to-Multipoint Migrations Need Even More Planning
Point-to-multipoint networks can be more complicated because the access point and subscriber radios typically belong to the same proprietary ecosystem.
Replacing one Cambium sector could mean replacing dozens—or hundreds—of subscriber units.
That makes a staged migration much more practical than a sudden forklift replacement.

A common approach is to:
- Design and install the replacement sector.
- Test coverage and capacity.
- Move subscribers in manageable groups.
- Monitor performance.
- Retire the original Cambium sector only after the new system is proven.
Depending on the application, alternatives could include unlicensed 5 GHz or 6 GHz systems, 60 GHz, CBRS, licensed microwave, E-band, or other carrier-grade platforms.
The cheapest radio is not necessarily the cheapest network once labor, subscriber equipment, interference, support, and downtime are considered.
What About FIPS-Validated Networks?
Government, defense, public safety, and regulated organizations have another important consideration.
Cambium's current situation does not automatically erase existing FIPS validations.
For example, Cambium's PTP 700 currently holds an active FIPS 140-3 Level 2 hardware validation.
But an active certificate does not guarantee future access to replacement equipment, repairs, licenses, or manufacturer support.
Alternatives exist as well.
Ceragon's IP-20 and IP-50 family includes a FIPS 140-3 Level 2 hardware validation, and NIST also lists an active FIPS 140-3 Level 2 validation for certain Arista WiFi access points.
The details matter.
If your project requires validated cryptography, do not simply accept a claim that a product “uses FIPS encryption” or “supports AES.”
The actual cryptographic module and approved hardware/software configuration must match the relevant validation.
There is also an approaching deadline: NIST states that FIPS 140-2 modules may be used for new systems only through September 21, 2026. Beginning September 22, those validations move to the Historical List.
That transition is separate from Cambium's administration, but organizations planning new secure deployments need to account for both.
What Should Cambium Customers Do Right Now?
Keep it simple.
1. Back up your network.
Save configurations, firmware, licenses, credentials, documentation, and controller data somewhere safe.
2. Test your recovery process.
Make sure those backups actually work.
3. Identify vendor dependencies.
Know what requires Cambium cloud services, activation, licensing, or external infrastructure.
4. Check your spare equipment.
Inventory spare APs, radios, switches, power supplies, and other critical components.
5. Prioritize systems by risk.
A guest network at a small office is different from a revenue-generating property network or a mission-critical wireless link.
6. Survey before replacing WiFi.
Do not assume a one-for-one AP swap is the right design.
7. Build a phased migration plan.
Replace equipment when it makes operational and financial sense—not simply because the headlines are uncomfortable.
